Training and Engineering for Armed Defense
All of our Defensive Knife Material is based on Michael Janich's Martial Blade Concepts.
All of the techniques are intuitive and easy to learn - which means that within four hours of training students acquire skills that increase their chances to prevail in a violent encounter.
Martial Blade Concepts is also build around using a small tactical folding knife of 2.5" - 4.0" blade length - in other words a tactical folding knife that one can legally carry in most places and jurisdictions.
This 4-hour course covers the most basic techniques of the Martial Blade Concepts curriculum. It includes recognizing attack patterns and taking appropriate action with your own knife to decisively take the attacker out of the fight. This means targeting muscles and tendons that allow the attacker to hold and wield his weapon and to stand and move.
This course is suitable as an introduction as well as a skillbuilder for return students. All necessary gear (training knife and eye protection) are provided.

How do you defend yourself when you can’t carry a firearm or knife? How do you create access to your weapon if you carry and come under attack before you have the chance to deploy it?
These questions are what this four-hour combatives course is about. Martial Blade Concepts/Counter Blade Concepts that combines instinctive responses with simplistic and highly effective counterattacks. We will work on empty-hand techniques and on incorporating simple tools like pens and flashlights as well as everyday items into our defensive arsenal.
Having the latest and greatest tactical pen will not magically let your opponent burst into flames, nor will the blinding effect of a 500-Lumen flashlight leave an attacker begging for mercy… you need a follow up to decisively taking that person out of the fight. In Martial Blade Concepts, we take out muscles and tendons that allow our assailant to stand and move – in this course we work on alternative, non-knife based mobility kills.

In 2011 and 2014 we hosted Michael Janich for two days of intense training above and beyond the skills that we cover in the 8-hour course.
The 2014 Seminar, held at South Coast Crossfit, covered alternate responses to the established angles of attack, additional empty-handed defenses as well as an in-depth segment on the use of tactical pens.
We are planning on hosting the Advanced Skills Seminar again in 2016
The defensive knife family of classes is focused on using a tactical folding knife for defensive purposes.
The deployment of the knife is an integral part of the training.
Invest into a solid training knife that resembles your carry knife as closely as possible.
Please check our gear section for suitable fixed-blade trainers.
For folding trainers, we recommend the Spyderco Delica or Spyderco Endura.
